Canadian Job Numbers as Expected for September

The job numbers were released on Friday for Canada for September.

Here are the highlights:

-          The unemployment rate for Canada declined 0.2 percentage points to 6.9% primarily as a result of fewer youths searching for work.  This is the lowest unemployment rate in Canada since December, 2008, but it is not reflective of the real unemployment rate since this doesn’t include a significant number of people who are no longer looking for work (who have dropped out of the labour participation numbers)

-          While employment increased by 11,900, there was a significant decrease in manufacturing jobs with 26,000 jobs lost in September.

-          The unemployment rate for Ontario declined 0.2 percentage points to 7.3%.

-          Alberta and Saskatchewan continue to have the lowest provincial unemployment rates in the country at 4.3% while New Brunswick has the highest unemployment rate at 10.7%

The U.S. job numbers have not been released for September because of the government shutdown.
