Find a new job. Make more money. Go back to school. Focus on a work/life balance. Career goals vary depending on each individual, but they all are set with the hopes that they are reached. With the New Year fast approaching, TorontoJobs.ca conducted a survey on career goals for 2013 and found that:
- 66% of people set career goals for themselves every year.
- 63% of those people set deadlines or action plans to ensure they reach their goals.
- 52% of people say that their company offers little to no help assisting them in reaching their goals.
Given the stats, TorontoJobs.ca compiled a list to help set career goals for 2013 and ensure that they are successful.
1. Set Expandable Goals. Create goals that will contribute to larger achievements, such as expanding your skill set, getting a promotion or finding a new job. These goals can be reached by taking classes, building your portfolio or volunteering in your field or the field you want to be in. Reaching your larger goals is going to take some time, so start planning now!
2. Be Realistic. Nothing will set you up for failure more than setting unrealistic and unreachable goals. Make sure that you have the ability and skill sets to reach the goals you set for yourself. If your long-term goal is something unrealistic right now, are there small goals that you can set that will help you eventually reach it?
3. Set Deadlines. Give a timeframe for when a goal should be reached. This will help motivate you to complete it and make you feel good once you have reached it. Setting a deadline will also help when it comes time for evaluation.
4. Don’t be Negative. Ensure that the goals you make are something that you want rather than something you want to avoid. For example goals should focus on the positives, like landing a dream job, instead of focusing on being stuck in your current role.
5. Remain Flexible. If you encounter barriers that might hinder your progress, don’t give up on your goals. Instead, modify them to meet your current situation. If a goal is no longer important, be open to letting it go. This will help focus energy into pursuing targets that you deem important. Use this criteria when setting objectives to give the best possible chance of achieving them.
6. Surround Yourself with People that Can Help You Reach Your Goals. Network and connect with people that can help you to achieve your career goals. Others that work in the industry will have insight on industry trends, opportunities and will be able to offer insight on how you can be successful. Ask questions and get involved – these people are where you want to be, so they will be able to help get you there!
7. Re-evaluate. Did you set career goals for 2012? With the year nearing an end, now is the time to evaluate how the past year went. Were you successful? Now is the time to figure out if something went wrong and how to correct it so that you reach your targets for 2013.
